| Consultation on a safer drug consumption facility for Edinburgh
From today until 1 July 2026, people can share their views about having a facility for people to take drugs under the care of medical professionals in the Old Town area. Glasgow opened a similar space last year and other major cities around the world also provide the service. It would allow those with a drug use problem access to a safe, clean space to use drugs they bring themselves. It would also allow them to access other services they may need, like drug treatment, other healthcare or housing advice. There is no confirmed potential site for the facility, but research shows the Old Town around Cowgate or Spittal Street areas the space would be most beneficial. More background on the proposal can be found at
The consultation is an opportunity for people in Edinburgh to share their views about whether to open such a facility. People with a particular interest or expertise will be consulted, such as people with lived experience of problem drug use, families affected by drug use, professionals working with drug users and people who live and work near the possible locations will be especially welcome to participate. The views from the consultation period will help to inform whether a formal business case to establish a facility will be developed asking the Scottish Government to fund the project. Edinburgh Residents can take part in an online survey or they can come along to one of the drop-in sessions in the city centre – these will be events where people can ask questions about the SDCF and say what they think. They will be held at: Waverley Court, 4 East Market Street, EH8 8BG on Thursday 14 May 2026 from 1-5 pm Thursday 29 May 2026 from 5-8 pm And at the Grassmarket Centre, 86 Candlemaker Row, EH1 2QA on Tuesday 9 June 2026 from 1-5pm Tuesday 16 June 2026 from 5-8pm There will also be separate meetings for:
