The Adolescent Substance Use Service (ASUS) is the NHS Lothian Service offering treatment and support for young people aged 18 and under, who are experiencing difficulties related to their own substance use. The aim is assisting young people to make and maintain positive changes to their substance use.
ASUS offers 1:1 appointments for therapeutic interventions. Young people can engage for as short or as long a period that is helpful. Appointments generally are offered on a weekly basis however this varies to suit individual needs. Appointment location (including online) and times are flexible to suit the young person. Interventions are primarily psychological treatments however if indicated, medical interventions can also be accessed.
As well as the fundamental task of increasing motivation to change, other areas addressed are functional analyses of substance use, relapse prevention, increasing prosocial activity, anger management, anxiety management, identity development, self-esteem building and other skills related to adolescence as well as substance use difficulties.
