National Records of Scotland data released today shows that there were sadly 92 drug-related deaths in Edinburgh in 2024. While it is positive that the change in the number of deaths that year was downwards, each individual death is a tragedy for the individuals, families, friends and communities affected. Edinburgh has a large number of people at risk of fatal drug overdose and the annual average number of drug related deaths remains very high compared to historical norms in Edinburgh and with rates of DRD elsewhere.
Staff in drug services, health and social care services, Police Scotland, housing and many other partner organisations across the city continue to work hard. They reduce drug related harm, make recovery a reality and support individuals, families andcommunities affected by substance use. The Edinburgh recovery community continues to offer its experience, strength and hope to those who seek it.
Drug related risks and harms remain very high, both nationally and locally. People who use substances and those who support them should remain vigilant, including being aware of recent Public Health Scotland and Scottish Drugs Forum alerts.
Information on sources of support is available at the Edinburgh Alcohol and Drugs Partnership website.
